The Roskilde Festival Charity Society, which is the association behind Roskilde Festival, ensures that the profits from the festival are donated directly to humanitarian and cultural purposes.

Volunteers – During the festival itself the number of volunteers increases to about 25,000. These volunteers staff the festival stalls, build stages, provide camping security etc. Most volunteers are from cultural organisations and sports associations in the area. These clubs and societies run most of the stalls at the Festival Site, and with their great variety in goods and atmosphere the stalls contribute to the unique, intimate and exciting ambience at Roskilde Festival.

The management – At Roskilde Festival overall management and top level coordination is handled by four people (Henrik Rasmussen, Henrik Bondo Nielsen, Esben Danielsen, Rikke Øxner).

Board of directors

Roskilde Festival is by far the largest and most demanding of the events that The Roskilde Festival Charity Society is involved in. Henrik Rasmussen handles the coordination, structuring and budget planning for the many events, small and large, that The Roskilde Festival Charity Society is involved in.

Copenhell Festival

Sidste års opfølger “No Time to Bleed” opnåede en 32.-plads på Billboards top 200.

February 23rd, 2010

Perth International Arts Festival

Posted by admin On March - 6 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Founded in 1953 by the University of West Australia, Perth’s International Arts Festival is the country’s oldest and largest multi-arts festival, far outreaching the city boundary that gives it its name.

Perth International Art Festival

Perth International Art Festival

The 2008 festival was Shelagh Magadza’s first as artistic director and she will continue in the role until 2011, aiming to “create a global conversation on the streets of Perth”, by dividing the event into four main sections: International Artists; Perth CBD and its wider metropolitan area; Western Australia and Indigenous Culture.

As an indication of the wide-reach of the festival in its search for international ensembles, in 2008 the theatre programme alone featured Tim Supple’s Indian and Sri Lankan version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in seven languages, as well as the equally acclaimed Blackwatch, performed by the National Theatre of Scotland.

Festival-goers can also expect extensive dance, music and visual arts programmes, as well as regular components – Meet the Artists sessions, Lotterywest Festival Films and the Perth Writers Festival.

Please visit the festival website for full details as they are released.

Dunkirk Carnival

Posted by admin On March - 6 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

The pre-eminent springtime event in northern France, the Dunkirk Carnival incorporates both a spectacular street procession and a series of balls, which take place over a six-week period. The carnival has roots going back hundreds of years.

Traditionally, the town’s main industry was fishing and Shrove Tuesday was a day when shipping owners laid on a banquet for their fishermen before they set off to Icelandic waters. A good reason to party hard! Today, the Sunday before Ash Wednesday sees a marvellous parade make its way through the town centre in which the star is Reuze Papa.

Reuze Papa is a giant figure, beloved by the townspeople (Lille, Douai and other Flemish towns also have their own giants, or geants). Before him marches a drum major dressed as an Imperial grenadier and the costumed carnavaleux, who carry coloured umbrellas and sing carnival songs.

True to the spirit of this festival of reversal, men wear women’s dresses, women dress in fancy dress and crowds look on and laugh. The procession ends at the church for a Mass and on countless nights the party continues at the Dunkerque Kursaal, which stages a series of balls (tickets required).

La Tomatina Tomato Fight in Bunyol

Posted by admin On March - 6 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

La Tomatina tomato fight in Buñol near Valencia happens every year on the last Wednesday in August though the partying starts earlier in the week.  The highlight of the festival is the tomato fight which takes place between 11am and 1pm on that day.

Tomato Kiss

Tomato Kiss

The event has become one of the highlights on Spain’s summer festivals calendar with thousands of people flocking to this little Valencian town for this chaotic event.

Such are the numbers going to La Tomatina that the event has become a victim of its own success. The sheer number of people means that it’s extremely difficult to get anywhere near the central area where the tomato lorries arrive so you may well find yourself a few streets away from the main action. Never mind, there are plenty people in the same boat and the street partying goes on no matter where you are.

Bunyol is a small village of some 9000 people whose population swells to some 30,000 on the day of La Tomatina. There is hardly any accommodation in the village itself so your best bet is to stay in a Hostel in Valencia or take a look at some Valencia Hotels. Be sure to book well in advance

On the morning of the festival there are trains from Valencia Central Station, which is about 40km away, at eight minutes past the hour There is no need to book tickets in advance and the journey takes 50 minutes.

The actual tomato fight lasts little over an hour beginning at midday and continuing until shortly after 1pm. So the 8.08am, 9.08am or 10.08 trains will get you there in plenty time. The earlier the better as the trains do get full. Alternatively, you can arrive by local bus or rent a car though this might not be a great idea considering the mess you’re likely to be in after the tomato battle.

Catch and throw

Catch and throw

Make sure you take a change of clothes for the return train journey – there are some public showers in Bunyol near the river.

The origins of La Tomatina aren’t clear with several theories explaining how Bunyol has become home to the world’s biggest tomato fight. However, the most plausible suggests that the most likely explanation dates back to 1945 when an annual parade of enormous figures with big heads (Gigantes y Cabezudos) was passing through the streets of Bunyol.

It seems that some youngsters tried to join in the parade and accidentally knocked over one of the giants who got to his feet and started swinging out at everyone around him. In retaliation the youngsters grabbed some tomatoes from a nearby vegetable stall and started throwing them at him until the police arrived to break things up.

The following year on the same last Wednesday of August these young people returned to the town hall square and started another tomato fight using their own tomatoes. Again the police intervened and in subsequent years the local council tried to ban the ‘El día de la Tomatina’ but with little success as event continued to grow year after year reaching the ludicrous size it is today.

“Try to enjoy yourself as much as possible but respect these rules and the people. In the “tomatina” festival there has never been a mishap and we would like it to stay that way so everybody around the world can have a good time.”

A splash of Greek cheer

Posted by admin On March - 4 - 20101 COMMENT

The city’s Greek-culture enthusiasts are bringing some extra color to St. Petersburg’s cultural scene.

By Elmira Alieva – The St. Petersburg Times

Asteri dance troupe – Greek cultural scene.

While Greece battles a severe financial crisis, Russian Greeks in St. Petersburg are developing a youth organization to spark people’s enthusiasm for Greece and Greek culture.

Those flying the flag for Greek culture in the city are young, positive people bursting with energy. They have Greek blood in their veins — some of them are descended from generations of Greeks, while others have just a few Greek ancestors. Many of them have come to study in St. Petersburg from other regions of Russia that are densely populated by Greeks — primarily the area around the Black Sea and the Northern Caucasus. Most of them call themselves Pontian Greeks, referring to Pontos, a region on the southern coast of the Black Sea colonized by ancient Greeks, who called the Black Sea Pontos Euxeinos — the Hospitable Sea.

Several years ago, a group of young Russian Pontian Greeks living in St. Petersburg started networking through the social networking site “Vkontakte.”

“Soon we realized that there were enough of us to start up a youth organization that would aim to unify young Greeks in St. Petersburg and to spread knowledge about Greece and Greek culture,” said Demis Pelivanidis, one of the founders of the organization and an ethnic Greek.

The young Greeks called their new organization Aetos, meaning eagle in Greek. The group’s main activities include the organization of Greek language courses, Greek and Pontian dance classes and Greek parties. The members build contacts with other Greek societies across Russia, including the St. Petersburg Greek society, Petropolis.

The Greek language courses are organized by Mikhail Borodkin, a young but experienced teacher, translator and interpreter. Russian by origin, Borodkin became passionate about both classical and modern Greek at school, and has worked as a teacher and a translator for several years.

Learning Greek is not as popular as some other European languages among Russians, but the similar alphabet, some common grammatical structures, Greek terminology that has entered the Russian language and the unique rhythm of Greek attract many Russian speakers.

“There are several groups of people who are learning Greek today,” said Borodkin. “First of all there are quite a lot of tourists, who having visited Greece have decided to learn this melodic language, which reminds them of the Mediterranean area. People also learn Greek for professional reasons, especially those who work in travel agencies, and Russian Greeks who emigrate to Greece, as well as university students. I’ve also encountered many situations in which Russian girls were learning Greek because their boyfriends or husbands were Greek.”

“It’s not just our history and bilateral friendship that unifies Russia, Greece and Cyprus, but also our common orthodox culture,” added Borodkin. “Our orthodox churches cooperate, this is why for many clergymen it is necessary to speak Greek. So quite often I teach Greek to trainee priests.”

The Greek dance classes in St. Petersburg were initially organized by Nikolai Halaichidi, a student of Greek origins from the Stavropol region of Russia who started folk dancing at the age of 10. He began teaching dance several years ago, when members of Aetos expressed an interest in traditional Greek dancing.

“So far we only have one group of dancers of about 15 people,” said Halaichidi. “There are always newcomers, whom we also teach and help to catch up with the rest of the class. I teach Pontian dancing, and my colleague, Olya Andready teaches Hellenic dances. Currently I’m forming a group for children aged 7 to 10,” he added.

Aetos’ main achievement so far is the creation of a folk dancing group named Asteri, meaning star in Greek, comprising students of the Greek dance classes led by Halaichidi. “Our first public performance was in September 2008 at an event devoted to the closing of the Summer Garden. I remember it was raining, we were completely soaked, but continued to dance. Then our performance was broadcast by a well known television channel,” he said.

Aetos – dance and social events.

Asteri performs at events devoted to Greek culture or to important events in Greek history. The dancers participate in events and festivals that aim to contribute to tolerance and friendship between different nations, and also dance at Greek parties organized by Aetos.

Greek youth parties are organized in the city on a regular basis. Music from Greece, Pontian music and folk dancing of a variety of genres feature on the evenings’ programs, along with performances by Asteri and different competitions. The organizers rent clubs and restaurants for the events, which are held at a different venue every time. They advertise their events through Vkontakte and by distributing flyers and posters.

Aetos has found a lot of fans among ethnic Russians who adore Greece. “I got bitten by the Greek bug during my internship there,” said Tatyana Alexandrova, a Russian member of Aetos. “Greeks are very welcoming, cheerful and hospitable people. When I returned home, I wanted to deepen my knowledge of Greek culture by learning Greek language and dancing. I am a member of the Asteri team and I have also performed in Oliva, my favorite Greek tavern in St. Petersburg,” she added.

“Greece… When I hear this word somewhere in a crowd, my heart starts to beat faster,” said Ksenia Konopleva, another Russian aficionado of Greek culture, explaining her interest in the local Greek culture scene.

“It is not only about the beauty of Greek landscapes; there is something that can be felt only in the heart. The air there is full of love and faith. There are so many monasteries and holy places… It’s impossible not to love Greece, and I’m so pleased that in the northern city of St. Petersburg, there is the opportunity to feel this atmosphere of warmth and kindness, thanks to Greek concerts and events organized here,” she said.

“I’m not Greek, but once I visited Greece and I realized that Greek spirit, culture and traditions are very close to my heart,” said Svetlana Salikhova, one of the most active non-Greek participants of Aetos.

“I like the positive approach of Greeks to life. It’s a pleasure to learn Greek and to perform with Asteri at events such as the ‘Days of Tolerance’ in St. Petersburg. Communication with upbeat Greeks brings me a lot of positive emotions, and participation in events connected to Greek culture enable me find good friends,” she added.
